LISTEN TO ME BABY & LISTEN REAL GOOD
The last few times I've spoken with my parents and other friends from back home, they've all said, "You sound good." And I said, "Like, no allergies good?" and they said, "No, you just sound like yourself again." In some ways this is alarming because I didn't know that I didn't sound like myself. I didn't feel exactly like myself, but I thought that was some business between me and my pillow at night. In any case, I sound like myself again, so LOOK. OUT. Especially if you get on the wrong side of a sassy tirade about smashmouth football, class identity, or something similar.
Also, this is my 23rd birthday, and I have lots of being good to myself to do today. Which started with reading zines in bed and will now progress to getting some reading/writing done, and trying to devise a way to way my Polamalu jersey in a way that is both High Fashion and Yinzer Birthday Girl. Which I think will necessarily involve big hair, a mini skirt, and some bubblegum. But only time will tell!
I feel an obligation to, you know, "look back" because that's what birthdays are for, but I don't really want to. 22 was like sleepwalking, which sucks because it was my "golden birthday" or whatevery they call it when the date of your birth matches your age. And I was like, THIS is my golden fucking year? And I have to wake up tomorrow at six so I can tell a bunch of 7th graders that they have to be nice to me?
It's okay. Everybody knows that I'm not so good at the even years. 19 was fantastic, 20 was depressing and sucky, 21 was great again, and last year was so-so, full of working-world isolation. So what's coming for 23? It's probably going to be amazing.
