HEY! DO YOU BELIEVE IN ANYTHING YOU CONTROL IN REALITY? I DO, I DO, I DO!
The underground culture of freaking out about MFA acceptances is really a splendored and troubling thing. Splendored because it reaches far into the past and reveals shit tons of "insider" information (UVA and NYU are always late with their notifications! Iowa sucks! They're a bunch of stuck up snots! Oh my god I got into Iowa! Congratulations! Coo coo coo!) Troubling because, well, see for yourself. Most of all, I think it's troubling because I was relatively unconcerned before I found all of these Internet worry-wart crevices. If you know me, you know how little I need the company of worry warts. I think most of the hysteria comes from one person saying, "Hey, I got into this program!" and then everybody else who applied there slobbers all over themselves with congratulations and then also seethes inwardly with envy and self-loathing. (Which, by the way, is palpable.) Also, there's some kind of hierarchy of acceptances--if you get a phone call, you're in for sheezy, if you get an e-mail or a letter it's a toss-up. Man, I wish I had no idea. If you know the awful feeling of waiting for a phone call from somebody who said they would call you, take that feeling and multiply it by eight, more or less, and you've got the situation. Good god. I'm going to have a self-imposed moratorium on the internet. This shit is ridiculous.
