METAMORPHOSIS SYMPHONY
Usually, I hate New Year's Eve. I remember listening to the alternative radio countdown when I was 12 and feeling supremely dissed when 311 was at number one, and I started crying in the Italian restaurant. I can't lie; I've been prone to these episodes. Sometimes I think I enjoy them just for the strangeness and hilarity of it. They are so much more frequent on New Year's Eve. I attribute this to nothing. Now, though, I'm feeling something other than this. I've been listening to Television (the band the Strokes wish they could be), and they describe that feeling of regeneration and hopeless city love that jumps up from time to time. DIDJA FEEL LOW? No, not at all. HUH?? is a brilliant chorus. I agree. It's all about 2004.

May I suggest a New Year's Eve playlist? I do this for your good, and my good. I want to rectify the awful sins brought down upon me by 311 back in 199X. So: 1)New Year, the Breeders 2) Venus, Television 3) I've Got a Feeling, the Beatles 4) Hanging On the Telephone, Blondie 5) Sweet Nuthin', the Velvet Underground 6) Like a Friend, Pulp 7) Comin' and Goin', Dusty Springfield 8) Nica's Dream, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers 9) Ballad of the Sin-eater, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists 10) White Noise Maker, Frank Black. That's just the beginning, but it's a good one. Best.
