I SPOTTED THE GLOW OVER THE MOUNTAIN TONIGHT

Chicago. What a great city. It's a typical midwestern city in its easy-going nature. It doesn't feel like you've got to get your evil self prepared to get your share of sidewalk. Just unpretentious. And cute. I'm a big fan.

The writing conference itself was kind of disappointing. I don't know if it's because my expectations were so high from last year's or what, but I didn't feel quite as energized by the atmosphere; instead I felt a lot more of the egotism and meanness that comes from putting a lot of writers in the same building. But this is the lesson, right? It was still a good trip, I think. I finally got over my fear of driving on the highway & in fact drove for four hours yesterday. Ah, it was great. I really like being competent.

Otherwise, things are quiet tonight and I'm very happy about that. Just me, the radio, the coffee, and the homework. Goodnight. I'll tell you more when I'm feeling more tempestuous and unglued, I'm sure.
